Hi folks and welcome back to all the teams who have returned for another season of nail biting drama and superb darts in possibly the best League in Belfast.

Getting us off to a cracking start was the match between last seasons champions St. Mathews and one of the teams that pushed them till the very last match last year Clonard Hibs.

St. Mathews 4 vs 4 Clonard Hibs

This match started as last season’s games ended with both teams fighting tooth and nails for maximum points. Mick McCartan (21) 121, 100, 97, 95, 79, 79 got the home team off to the best start possible beating Hugh McShane 140, 101, 100, 85 (2 0). Clonard then had two aces in their pack Adam McDade 140, 119, 99, 95, 85, 84 beating Billy McDade 140, 140, 100, 85, 85 (2 0) in 16 & 28 darts & Dan Sloan (20 & 22) 140, 140, 100, 98, 85, 85 doing likewise beating Jap McKinley 100, 100, 85 (2 0). Gerard McGuiness (25) 123, 100, 95, 85, 81,81 brought his side level beating Anto Smith 100, 100, 80, 80, 80, 77 (2 1). Clonard then burst into an almost unassailable lead with two more wins from Dan Delany (2 0) 100,100, 83, 81, 81 against Seamus Roberts 100, 100, 100, 86 & Pearse Maguire (2 0) 122, 100, 100, 96, 85, 70 over Con Kielty 140, 100, 100, 98, 82, 81 to put themselves on the verge of a great win. St. Mathews however showed champions spirit and determination to snatch a point through their last two players Martin Irwin (2 0) 140, 140, 85, 81, 81, 80 in 20 & 26 darts over Conor Hanna 180, 100, 83, 81, 79 and Davy McCusker 20 & 26 140, 125, 100, 100, 85, 80 over Sean Paul Grant 180, 100,85,85,85. Great entertaining match that showed both teams strengths and areas for improvement going forward.

Star Celtic 2 vs 6 Crumlin Star

The luck of the draw saw a cracking opening North Belfast derby take place at the Crumlin Star clubrooms. Star Celtic got off to a flier in this match taking the first two games with 2 0 & 2 1 wins for Rab Lyttle (23) 125, 100, 82, 81, 81, 78, 70 over Hugh Grieves 100, 98, 95, 80, 75 and Henry McTasney (22) 112, 105, 92, 89, 78, 69, 69 over Peter McAlorum 94, 85, 81, 70, 60, 60, 60, respectively. Unfortunately that’s as good as Celtic’s night got as the Crumlin team strung 6 wins in a row from Ben Lagan (2 0) 88, 85, 83, 81, 78, 66, 60 John Dillan (2 0) 23 & 29 100, 85, 80, 80, 60, 60, 60, 60, Tommy Henry (2 0) 29 & 31 123, 100, 99, 94, 81 Peter Fitzpatrick (2 1) in a cracking game with legs of 17 & 22 140, 125, 100, 100, 100, 95, 85, 85, 60 Dougie Bowes (2 1) 22 140, 140, 100, 100, 95, 81, 60, 60, 60, & Jim Flanagan (2 0) 95, 79, 76, 67,67,61 over Celtic’s Gerard Smith, Daniel Haywood, Rhys Haywood 100, 85 Martin Maloney 100, 85, 85, 81, 81, 81, Ian Haywood (16) 121, 84, 82, 80, 70, 65 & Tony Kelly 100, 85, 60, 60, 60.

Donegal Celtic 3 vs 5 Casey’s

The Donegal Celtic club hosted their first league match of the new season against Casey’s and it was a tight affair that could have went anyway with both teams having opportunities but Casey’s taking theirs better than their Suffolk road opponents. Casey’s took the first three matches all with a 2 0 score-line. Stevie Lecky 100, 100, 100, 84 Dan Cahoon 17 & 28 140, 100, 100,96, 96, 87, & Conor Smith got the better of D/C’s Harry Smyth, Cealon Kearny & Joe Corr 85. James McStravick 18 & 21 (2 0) 140, 121, 100,100,100,81 got the D/C onto the scoreboard with a cracking win over Casey’s Olcan Kearny 121, 100,100,99,83. Casey’s responded again through Matt Boyle 27 140, 100, 85,85,83 who won a tight game against the home teams Junior McManus 128, 100, 96, 95 to make it 1 vs 4 at this stage of the contest. Matt Doon 27 140, 140, 100, 100, 85, 60 fought tooth and nail in a cracking tussle to get the better of Casey’s Gerard Holmes 26 140, 121, 100, 100, 100, 96,82 to bring it back to 2 vs 4. In taking the next game Casey’s Paul Smith (2 0) 28 & 30 100, 100, 100, 100, ensured they went back to Andytown with a full compliment of points when he beat John McLaughlin 140,100,100, 83, 83. Gary Smyth showed he was not considering the last game a dead rubber throwing cracking darts of 180, 100, 100, 83, 60, 60, 60 in his 2 0 win over Liam McMenamin which ensured the game finished very tight but just in Casey’s favour.

Hibs 58 5 vs 3 Swilly

The Swilly brought a new team with a great mixture of experience and youthful exuberance down the falls to take on Hibs 58. They got off to a flying start when Patrick McGeown (2 1) 21 & 21 140, 120, 101, 100, 99, 95, 83 beat Hibs 58’s Mark Lynch 95, 95, 85, 81, 80. Tucker Clarke (2 0) 100, 100, 99, 81, 81 levelled the score in beating Felix McGeown. Tucker Kearny (2 1) 27 & 30 100, 100, 85, 85, 81, 81, 81 put Swilly in front again beating Sean Patterson 100, 100, 100, 100, 85, 83 Joe Dinnen (2 1) 24 100, 100, 83, 80 made it all square in beating Paul Goodman 140, 100, 100, 82,60. Damien Corbett (2 0) 25 & 25 played a very steady game in the next against Tom Kearny to put Hibs into the lead for the first time on the night followed by Martin Corbett (2 0) 29 & 29 125, 121, 100, 85, 85, who beat Mick Sullivan. Hibs captain Tony Corr (2 0) 22 140, 121, 100, 85, 81 produced the goods in the next game to ensure they took maximum points with a win over Swilly’s Kevin O’Neill 135, 120, 100, 95, 88, 87, 85.The last game of the night saw Swilly’s Mick Burns (2 1) 121, 99, 92, 85, 84, 81, 80 gain a good win over Hibs 58’s Connor Christy (26) 91, 85, 83, 81, 81, 81, to leave the final score 5 vs 3 to the lower falls outfit.
