John Casey 5-A-Sides Trophy.

St. Mathews defeat Hibs 58 in Classy Late night exhibition of darts

The Hibs club in Clonard was the venue where central dart men turned up in their droves to try to win the John Casey trophy.

Preliminary Match 1:

Crumlin Star 0 vs 3 Casement A

Paul Condon started well for Casement hitting great scores of 139, 136, 60, 60, 60, 60 in his win over Crumlin’s Freddie Stilges who himself hit scores of 100, 95, 95, 95, 60. Gerry McCormick 100, 92, 83, 81, 70, 60, 60, 60, made it two in a row beating Peter McAlorum 98, 62, 62, 60 then young Colm McGuinness 100, 95, 85, 85, 85, 60 finished the game off beating Fra Glennon 100, 66, 60 to move Casement into the last 16 round.

Preliminary Match 2:

Clonard Hibs B 3 vs 0 Casement C

Anto Smith started the ball rolling for Clonard Hibs B hitting scores of 140, 100, 93, 60, 60 in beating Casements Martin Lawlor 95, 85, 83. Hugh McShane 125, 121, 100, 80, 70 then doubled the lead in taking out Paul Wisdom 73, 66, 64, 63 & finally John Doyle 121, 88, 85, 78, 61, 60 made it 3 vs 0 when he beat John Quinn 112, 87, 83, 82, 78.

Last 16 Round:

Hibs 58 B 1 vs 3 Casement B

Vinty Lenzi 135, 100, 85 took the first leg against Sean Patterson jnr 92, 85, 60, 60. Joe Dinnen 100, 100, 85, 81 levelled the scores in beating Ciaran McGuinness 121, 110, 95. Mickey Tierney 81, 81, 70, 60 put Casement back in front when he defeated an unlucky Jim Boardman 132, 100, 85, 60 and then Henry McCann 85, 83, 81, 60 finished it off when taking the next game against Adam Lynch 132, 60, 60.

Donegal Celtic B 0 vs 3 St. Mathews B

This game was almost a walkover as the D/C team were struggling for a team and gave byes in the first two games. Gerard McGuinness 125, 92, 85, 83 showed no mercy though and took out D/C’s Harry Smith 110 in the third leg to progress to the quarter finals.

Clonard Hibs B 3 vs 2 Swilly B

Big Dan Sloan got a bye in the first leg then John Doyle 137, 85, 77, 60 made it 2-0 beating Eamo 100, 60, 60. The Swilly team fought back brilliantly and levelled the game taking the next two matches with wins from Mick Burns 95, 95, 70, 65, 60, 60 over Anto Smith 100, 60, 60 & Brendan McStravick 140, 123, 92, 60, 60 over Richard Mervyn 100, 83, 81. The last game was won by Big Hugh from the Hibs team who beat an unlucky Felix McGeown to get through to the last eight.

Clonard Hibs A 3 vs 0 Crumlin Star

This game pitted two of the fancied teams against each other and a tight game was expected. This was not the way it turned out though as first Dan Delaney 100, 85, 85, 60 beat John Dillon 140, 100, 60 then Adam McDade (24) 140, 140, 125 beat Dougie Bowes and finally Conor Hanna 140, 100, 60, took out Hugh Grieves 100, 85, 60 to leave it a whitewash and put the previous winners through to the quarters.

Star Celtic B 2 vs 3 Star Celtic A

This match was one of only 3 games to go the distance in this round of the tournament on the night. Paul Fitzpatrick took the first for the A team over Tony Kelly only to watch both Henry McTasney jnr & Ian Haywood both win their games against Daniel Haywood & Eamon McGovern. The A team levelled the match when Rab Lyttle beat Danny Anderson leaving it up for grabs in the last leg. It was the B teams Rhys Haywood who took that last one against his team captain Henry McTasney snr to put his team into the next round.

St. Mats A 3 vs 1 Casey’s A

Another one of the favourites showed they meant business when their Martin Irwin (30) took the first leg against Paul Smith. Steven Leckey levelled it when he beat Con Kielty but that was as good as it got though as both Seamy Roberts and Davy McCusker played great darts in beating Eugene Brannigan and Olcan Kearney.

Swilly A 0 vs 3 Casement A

The Swilly A team had the look of “Dark Horses” about them with 5 really good players in their team but Casement A didn’t give them a sniff. Gerry McCormick 100, 95, 83, 60, 60, 60 set the tone in the first leg against Kevin O’Neill 101, 97, 96, 66, 63. Paul Condon 95, 85, 83, 60 did likewise in the second beating Swilly’s Tucker Kearney 100, 81, 81, 60 and Ricky Saddler 95, 95, 95, 95, 85 who didn’t put a foot wrong against Paul Goodman who himself hit scores of 140, 123, 121. A very tight game in which the score didn’t show how close the outcome was.

Donegal Celtic A 2 vs 3 Hibs 58 A

Martin Corbett 140, 100, 99, 80 60, 60 took the first leg against Gary Smith 140, 85, 85, 60. Matt Doone 140, 85, 85, 60 levelled it taking the next against Damien Corbett 95, 93, 60, 60. Mark Lynch 140, 121, 60, 60 put Hibs back into the lead when he took the third leg against Joe Corr 81, 81, 81, 65 to take it to the final leg decider in which Sean Patterson 100, 100, 99, 91, 78, 60, 60 found some good form to just get the better of Alan Hanna 85, 85, 85.

Quarter – Finals:

Star Celtic B 2 vs 3 St. Mats B

This was a cracking game with first one team then the other being in the ascendancy. Gary Healy 100, 85, 81, 76, 66, 62 took the first for Star Celtic over Gerard McGuinness 90, 60, 60, 60, 60. Jap McKinley 100, 81, 81, 81, 80, 60 levelled it in beating Henry McTasney jnr 88, 85, 85, 83. Jimmy Lavery 100, 100, 100, 81 showed exactly what he can do to put his side in front against Ian Haywood 100, 85, 85, 85, 81 only to sit and then watch Tony Kelly 125, 60, 60, 60 take it to the decider by beating John Considine 100, 85, 85, 62, 60. In that decider Joe O’Kane showed what he is made of when he took out Rhys Haywood and put his team through to the Semi’s.

Casement A 1 vs 3 St. Mats A.

Two of the big guns were drawn together in this match and it didn’t disappoint. Paul Condon 100, 99, 85, 80, 78 took the first leg against Con Kielty 95, 60, 60, 60. Seamy Roberts 140, 100, 85, 60 levelled it with a great win over Gerry McCormick 1225, 100, 85, 85. Up stepped Davy McCusker (26) 180, 138, 100, 85, 68 to put his team 2 – 1 ahead with a win against Ricky Saddler 95, 85, 85, 83 and his team-mate Martin Irwin 100, 81, 81, 81, 60 completed the win with a hard fought victory over Paddy McGuinness 100, 100, 100, 60 to get them through to the last four teams.

Clonard Hibs B 1 vs 3 Clonard Hibs A

The two Clonard teams were drawn together therefore ensuring at least one of them into the semi’s. Dan Delaney 100, 100, 85, 85, 85 got the A team off to a cracking start in beating Richard Mervyn. Adam McDade 137, 100, 85, 85, 85 made it 2 – 0 taking out Dan Sloan. Anto Smith turned some heads in the next however when he defeated reigning Individual Champ Desi Magee to make it 2 – 1. Connor Hanna 140, 100, 100 however restored order and took the A team into the last four when he beat clubmate John Doyle.

Casement B 0 vs 3 Hibs 58 A

This game was a lot closer than the scoreline would suggest and it came down to hitting the doubles first in most games. Martin Corbett (30) 100, 100, 100, 95, 85 took the first against Ciaran McGuinness 100, 100, 100, 85. Sean Patterson (32 + 81 fin) 180 140, 85, 85 made it 2 – 0 against Mickey Tierney 115, 100, 96 and Tony Corr (31) 100, 100, 100, 85 finished it off beating Henry McCann 100, 100, 85, 60 to get them through to the last four draw.

The last four teams were St. Mats A & B Clonard Hibs A & Hibs 58 A and the draw separated the two Short strand teams.

Semi-Final 1:

Hibs 58 A 3 vs 1 St. Mats B

Martin Corbett (30) started off like a rocket in the first game hitting scores of 180, 100, 85, 75 in his win over Jimmy Lavery 85, 85, 81, 81. Mickey McCartan did likewise for St. Mats in the next one hitting scores of 114, 100, 95, 85, 60 in taking it from Sean Patterson 135, 81, 60, 60, 60, 60. Damien Corbett (31) 121, 99, 96, 92, 83, 76 took the third leg against Jap McKinley 100, 80, 65, 60 and Tony Corr 83, 81, 60, 60, 60, 60 put Hibs 58 into the final taking the next leg in beating Gerard McGuinness 83, 79, 79, 60.

Semi- Final 2:

Clonard Hibs A 1 vs 3 St. Mats A

Martin Irwin took the first for St. Mats beating a formidable opponent in Connor Hanna unfortunately no scores were written on the match card so I can’t enlighten you with how they both threw. Adam McDade took the next against Billy McDade to level things up. Davy McCusker (31) 180 beat Pearse Maguire to make it 2 – 1 and his team mate Seamy Roberts (29) gave a MOM performance to take out Dessie Magee and put his team into the final.

John Casey 5-A-Sides Final

The final was a cracking & tense affair with both teams desperate to claim the spoils. Seamy Roberts (26) 100, 100, 100, 100, 85 gave his second MOM performance in a row in taking the first game from Damien Corbett who hit cracking darts of his own 121, 95, 90, 83, 81, 77. Tony Corr 140, 100, 95, 85, 81 gave a captains performance to level things up in beating Billy McDade 100, 85, 81, 80. Martin Corbett 125, 97, 95, 60, 60 put the home team in front for the first time in the final beating St. Mats’s stalwart Davy McCusker. Back came St. Mats with a real game changer when Con Kielty (31) 135, 121, 100, 100, 100 beat Mark Lynch 100, 100, 100, 80 to leave it a 2 – 2. The final game saw Martin Irwin (31) 180 100, 100, 96 and his teammates lift the roof off the Hibs club when he hit his double in beating Sean Patterson 100, 85, 85, 80, 66, 60 to take the trophy across town to the Strand.

A great nights darts were held and although a late finish the best team on the night took the plaudits....Sean P.
